Utilising a basement room formerly used for storage, I designed a cinema room with the feel of an exclusive club. The room was gutted to allow for the wiring in of audio and lighting cables. I specified a Futronix P-400 dimming unit to control the light levels, which the client wanted to be kept low for a more intimate and authentic cinema experience. Tiny spot LEDs above the deep walnut shelf in the window recess highlight the metallic silver curtains. Warm white linear LEDs either side of the screen and along the far wall create a bar-like atmosphere and give subtle illumination to the room when the main recessed downlights in the ceiling are turned off. Programming different scenes into the P-400 dimming unit gives the client greater control over lighting levels, which they can set according to the party’s mood.
I made use of the existing recesses in the room to create built-in storage for DVDs and the AV equipment, which are lit internally by LED strips. The woodwork was sprayed gun-metal grey to match the walls and thick-pile carpet. A co-ordinating textured wallpaper highlights the rear wall above the waist-height cupboards.
Ligne Roset “Togo” seating and a Merrow vintage rosewood table are set low to the floor so that viewers can sink into the chairs and don’t have far to reach for their drinks or snacks, creating the ultimate home cinema experience.
